New Jersey Hospital Safety Grades

A national report card on hospital safety came out this week that all New Jersey residents should see. As one of New Jersey’s top medical malpractice law firms (see recent verdicts and settlements here) this report definitely caught the attention of our medical malpractice lawyers here at Mintz & Geftic.

The report was done by the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit health care watchdog organization. Their bi-annual grading system is something that medical malpractice lawyers, hospital administrators and patients everywhere pay close attention to. The Hospital Safety Scores use a letter-grade system to rate over 2,500 hospitals nationwide and the full list of grades for New Jersey’s hospitals can be found at the bottom of this post.

Our medical malpractice lawyers reminded readers last year that preventable medical mistakes ranks third in the leading cause of death in the United States, only behind heart disease and cancer.

As medical malpractice lawyers we recognize that the vast majority of doctors are intelligent, compassionate, and dedicated to their patients. However, like in any other profession, mistakes can and do occur. Unfortunately, just a little mistake can have fatal results in the field of medicine. Even the very best doctors will likely make a few mistakes in the course of a long career, which is why they purchase medical malpractice insurance to protect themselves and their patients when a mistake or accident happens.

At Mintz & Geftic, our medical malpractice lawyers are here to help patients that have suffered a serious injury caused by a preventable medical error. Our medical malpractice lawyers have experience in handling some of the most challenging medical malpractice cases. We use some of the top resources available in conducting a thorough review of medical records to determine whether or not we will pursue a case.  Our medical malpractice lawyers are highly selective in pursuing these cases and we spend significant time and expend resources in investigation of all potential medical malpractice cases.

Medical Malpractice Lawyers – Startling Statistics

Finally, before reading the list of grades below, here are three startling numbers from the Leapfrog Group’s analysis:
1. 206,021 avoidable hospital deaths each year
2. 33,459 lives could be saved if every hospital improved their safety record to A standards.
3. 43,903 avoidable deaths still occur in hospitals with an A grade each year.
