Recent reports released by agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have shown this increase is real and the impact is being felt across the country.
TRUCK ACCIDENTS – KEY STATISTICS
- 5,005 people were killed as a result of accidents involving large trucks in 2019. This number represents a 36% increase since 2010. (NHTSA)
- Between 2005-2009, the number of fatalities caused by large truck accidents decreased 35%.
- Of the 5,005 who died in these large truck accidents, 18% were occupants of large trucks. 71% were occupants of passenger vehicles and 11% were motorcyclists, pedestrians or cyclists.
- In 2018, 75% of trucks involved in fatal traffic crashes were large, heavy trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 26,000 pounds.
- 30 percent of work zone fatal crashes and 10 percent of work zone injury crashes involved at least one large truck (FMCSA).
- Drivers of large trucks involved in fatal crashes were less likely to have previous license suspensions or revocations than were passenger car drivers.
- Two percent of the drivers of large trucks involved in fatal crashes in 2019 had blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of .08 grams per deciliter (g/dL) or higher, much lower than drivers of other vehicle types (29% for motorcycles, 20% for passenger cars, and 19% for light trucks).
- In 2019, 118,000 large trucks were involved in crashes resulting in an injury, 5% increase truck accident injuries from 2018.
