New iPhones can detect car accidents

We are an experienced personal injury law firm in New Jersey representing the seriously injured victims of motor vehicle accidents. Our accident injury lawyers work in one of the most densely populated areas in the country , so it is not a surprise that we have become the go-to attorneys for those injured in major car and truck accidents.

We don’t often get too concerned with technology news when it comes to our blog, but a recent announcement from Apple caught our attention. With people lining up for blocks every time they release a new iPhone, we’re pretty sure Apple doesn’t need us to help with promotions . However, as a personal injury law firm that represents the victims of accidents, Apple introducing a crash detection feature certainly piqued our area of interest.

Which APPLE Devices Will HAVE ACCIDENT DETECTION?

Apple’s new crash detection features will be available on some of their new devices. These devices will include the following phones with the latest version of the IOS:

  • Apple iPhone 14
  • Apple iPhone 14 Pro

In addition, the following watches will also be able to detect severe accidents when running the latest version of watchOS:

  • Apple Watch Series 8
  • Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
  • Apple Watch Ultra

HOW THESE APPLE DEVICES WILL KNOW WHEN a CRASH OCCURs and when it’s severe

The iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and newer Apple Watch models will contain sensors to help in vehicle crash detection. Those sensors include an axis gyroscope and high G-force accelerometer.

Apple’s press release on these new devices said, “To create the [crash detection] algorithm, data was collected from these new motion sensors at professional crash test labs with common passenger cars in simulated real-world accidents, including head-on, rear-end, side-impact and rollovers.”

According to The Wall Street Journal, “Apple tapped a data set of more than 10 million suspected vehicle impacts to improve the accuracy of the crash detection system, cross-referencing the crash data with calls to 911 — since crashes associated with 911 calls are more likely to be legitimate.”

How exactly Will Crash Detection Work on Your iPhone 14 and Apple Watch?

According to Apple Support, “Crash Detection is designed to detect severe car crashes—such as front-impact, side-impact, and rear-end collisions, and rollovers—involving sedans, minivans, SUVs, pickup trucks, and other passenger cars.” Here is the detailed description taken directly from Apple’s support page.

When it detects a severe crash, your iPhone or Apple Watch sounds an alarm and displays an alert
  • Your iPhone reads the alert, in case you can’t see the screen. If you have only your phone, the screen displays an Emergency Call slider and your phone can call emergency services.
  • Your Apple Watch chimes and taps your wrist, and checks in with you on the screen. If you have only your watch, the screen displays an Emergency Call slider. If you have a watch with cellular or your watch is connected to Wi-Fi, then it can call emergency services.
  • If you have your iPhone and Apple Watch, the Emergency Call slider appears only on your watch, and the call is connected and the call audio plays from your watch.
  • If you’re able, you can choose to call emergency services or dismiss the alert.
  • If you’re unable to respond, then your device automatically calls emergency services after a 20-second delay.
  • If you’ve added emergency contacts, your device sends a message to share your location and let them know that you’ve been in a severe car crash.
  • If you’ve set up your Medical ID, your device displays a Medical ID slider, so that emergency responders can access your medical information.
  • If the vehicle has its own integrated way to detect a crash and make a call, then that process will proceed without change. Crash Detection won’t cancel any emergency calls already in progress on your iPhone. Crash Detection will cancel ongoing, non-emergency calls on your iPhone or Apple Watch.

iPhone Crash detection – real world impact

After a serious care or truck accident occurs, how quickly responders are on the scene is critical . Every second matters when it comes to life-threatening major injuries after an accident. Any feature that can help speed up that process is clearly something that can save lives. As a result, this is clearly a positive innovation on the surface.

It’s important to note, however, that test data and Apple’s press releases are only that. Therefore, how these devices work in the real world will tell us just how valuable this feature is. We will continue to follow-up on this topic, so please follow us on social media to get notified of future blog posts.
