J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS?

We know what everyone is thinking, how can the Jets be in the news during the week of the Super Bowl?

Did you accidently step into a time machine and windup in 1969? Nope, the only guarantee Joe Namath is giving these days is that your steak will be tender, as seen here.

Oh no, did another Jets player get arrested? Nope…well, at least we don’t think so, but it is only Monday.

Did they fire another coach? No again, that’s strike three.

While most Jets fans are well into their typical January routine of picking up the pieces and pondering what went wrong this season, their cheerleaders have been given the rare opportunity to actually celebrate a victory after December. Of course, this victory happens to come against its own team.

A New Jersey court approved a $325,000 settlement between the “Flight Crew” and the Jets this week for a class action lawsuit that was filed in 2014. The lawsuit accused the Jets of wage theft and was the fourth such class action lawsuit filed by an NFL cheerleading team against their parent franchise for wage and hour violations. While they earned a paycheck for each game, the cheerleaders were not paid for the total amount of hours they worked at practices and at other team-sponsored events.

A representative for one of the cheerleaders said that when comparing the actual hours worked versus what they were paid, it amounted to only $3.77 per hour. When factoring in the required hair, makeup and transportation expenses, the hourly rate went below $1.50 an hour.

As a result of the settlement, the 52 cheerleaders in the class action will receive $2,500 for each season they worked in the two-year period covered by the suit. In addition, if a cheerleader also participated in photo shoots during that time, she could receive up to $400 per shoot. The final amounts will include interest as well.

It isn’t exactly playing in the Big Game for the Lombardi trophy, but I think Jets fans will take any win they can this time of year. On the bright side, we’re only six months away from training camp.
